I found a fun website called Tune Glue. It calls itself a relationship explorer but instead of being a quiz from a weekly woman's magazine, this site explores the relationship between musical artists. So for example, you could see how many steps it takes to get from The Rolling Stones to Paris Hilton.
I tried searching for Ryan Adams and the immediate links it came out with were Sufjan Stevens, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Elliot Smith, Whiskeytown, Wilco and Damien Rice. While I'm not sure they're the links I would immediately make, I'm fans of all these guys. So perhaps it's good for finding music you like, rather than a reference guide.
