CD review: TOM McRAE – KING OF CARDS

TOM MCRAE – KING OF CARDS
(V2)

Mecury Music Prize nominee Tom McRae has struggled to meet expectations since his eponymous debut. While 'King Of Cards' may be his most accessible album to date, it won't blow your socks off.

It promises much, opening with the melodic 'Set The Story Straight' and its great hook, then into the first single "Bright Lights" and the sing-along chorus but then descends into mediocrity. Undoubtedly a talented vocalist, McRae rests on his downbeat laurels using Sigur-Ros like guitar effects to fill out sparse songs. There isn't a track here to make you sit up and take notice. The album glides overhead like a cool breeze; pleasant but forgettable.
