Sure this has been out since April, but what with the new album and all, I'm feeling in a Wilco mood. I've got their other DVDs - I Am Trying to Break Your Heart and Sunken Treasure Live and I've just watched the trailer for the new one - Ashes of American Flags. They are possbily the best live band around, and this dvd is them doing what they do best.

Wilco (the band) are done experimenting. They know their sound now. They shaped and honed it through Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born. We thought we saw a different side of them on Sky Blue Sky but it turns out they were settling into a groove. Wilco (the album) is Wilco (the band) in a place where they're happy.
Wilco (the album) is a great collection of songs showcasing the whole spectrum of the Wilco. It contains sing-a-long numbers like those from Summerteeth that will stick in your head all day (Wilco (the song)), experimental guitar numbers like Spiders (kidsmoke) (Bull Black Nova) and beautiful simple guitar songs (You and I). In short there is something for every Wilco fan here. But does it make a great album? Yes.
Every Wilco album I've ever listened to is a grower. I hated Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the first time I played it, yet something kept drawing me back. Wilco (the album) is no different. First time around Wilco (the Song) will have you hitting repeat over and over again. It's a tongue-in-cheek self aware song about how much the band love their fans, providing a "sonic shoulder to cry on" who'll love you baby, even when no one else will. The next listen you'll notice One Wing, a fine Wilco song with one of the finest Wilco riffs yet. In repeated listens you'll get stuck on "You and I", the gorgeous love song duet with Fiest and perhaps my new favourite song before reaching "Country Disappeared" with it's nod to George Harrison, the guitar rock "I Don't Know" and the closer "Everlasting" surprisingly similar to Sky Blue Sky's last song - "On and On and On".
Wilco (the album) is not strikingly different like YHF was. It is a natural progression from the previous records, but it is fresh, it is inventive and it is worth buying.

Wilco and Fiest perform You and I
I think this is my favourite song from the Wilco (the Album). Fiest provides such a magnificent counterpart to Tweddy's husky voice. They sound beautiful together and I think that this is now one of my all time favourite Wilco songs.

WILCO - new album and DVD
The newspapers may be full of doom and gloom but this should bring a smile to your face: Wilco are brining out a new record.
The title and tracklisting are still to be decided but the songs are finished. They will see Wilco return to the experiments of the studio, rather than the live, organic feel of 2007's SKY BLUE SKY.
Rolling Stone was lucky enough to listen to a very early version and concludes that "the disc gives off a strong country vibe, with lots of pedal steel and acoustic guitar. Standout cuts include the mournful ballad "My Country Disappeared," the Being There-style rocker "Sunny Feeling," a duet with Feist ("You and I") and the band's new unofficial theme, "Wilco, the Song," which features the chorus "Wilco will love you.""

The release date is slated for June, and if it is anything like their string of fantastic albums (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost Is Born, Sky Blue Sky) perhaps 2009 won't turn out to be such a bad year after all.
Also, Wilco are releasing a tour DVD - Ashes of American Flags. It's getting screenings in cinemas accross the states( you can see the schedule here)after winning the award for Best Cinematography at the Big Sky Film Festival in Missoula, MT.

Jeff Tweedy in the New York Times
Jeff Tweedy, the lead singer and songwriter in Wilco, writes today in the New York Times about his ongoing struggle with headaches and his battle against addiction to prescription painkillers.

Jeff Tweedy is primarily known as the lyricist, lead singer and guitarist of Wilco, one of America’s most popular and critically successful rock bands. He is also a lifelong migraine sufferer whose headaches were for decades compounded by bouts of depression and panic disorder.
In 2004, Tweedy suffered a collapse and entered a rehabilitation clinic in Chicago to treat his conditions and a resulting addiction to prescription painkillers. In Tweedy’s estimation, his new found ability to treat and manage his depression and panic has helped him to remain migraine-free for the past four years. In a conversation this month, Tweedy spoke about how migraines and mood disorders impacted his childhood, his musical career and his creative and personal life.

I honestly do not remember a time in my life when I did not have headaches, and know what they were and know they were called migraines. My mother was a migraine sufferer, and my sister is as well. Now, if I was having legitimate migraines or I just called every headache a migraine because my mother had them, I don’t know for sure, but, like I said, I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t having them.

CD Review - Wilco: Sky Blue Sky
A big album. I've been looking forward to the release of Sky Blue Sky for some years.

I think I've made up my mind. yes, i think i can now say with some certainty that...
the new Wilco album is great.
Yes, great. It was with some trepidation that I tore open the cellophane wrapper and hit the play button. After two truly wonderful albums in Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born, aren't they due a dud? Perhaps, but that's not what they've delivered.
More relaxed, less frantic and comfortable in its own skin, Sky Blue Sky showcases a band who can move from more familiar soaring guitar solos to Uncle Tupelo-era acoustic ballads, and back again without breaking a sweat. Frontman Jeff Tweedy called this "hands down the easiest Wilco album to make" and it's obvious. The songs feel happier, without the frustration and anger of a band falling apart (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) or a crippling drug addiction (A Ghost Is Born). Notably absent is the challenging fuzz and noise from the previous two albums. Sky Blue Sky is much more accessible yet on first listen doesn't sound like much. Like the best relationships this album makes you yearn to listen to it again, and rewards your time by revealing new facets you hadn't noticed before. At first "Impossible Germany" will seem like the greatest song ever written, then "Please Be Patient With Me" will captivate you with its gentle harmonies before you move onto the sticatto lead guitar of "Hate It Here". If you buy Sky Blue Sky, be prepared to listen to nothing else for weeks, this is Wilco at their effervescent peak.

It's more of a family tree, but not neccessarily biographical. This song is one of the more conceptual songs on the record. It's trying to reflect a present, past and future in a linear kind of way with the explosive section in the middle that's a lot more kinetic than the droning past and the ambiguous future.
Impossible Germany
This song reminds me of waking up at a certain point in your life, and you ask yourself, 'How did I get here?' Sometimes you're pretty grateful where you ended up. There are a lot of layers to that song since it's been around so long. There are
elements of political refection and historical perspective that I feel I've gotten more interested in as I've gotten older.
Sky Blue Sky
That is probably as direct as I've ever gotten in a song before. It's a very crystallized moment: watching a parade go by in my hometown, and getting blocked from getting across the main drag, preventing me from going home. And at some point, thinking it was a good idea to turn around and not go home.
Side with the Seeds
It's a pretty confusing song. There's such a polarization in all of our lives these days, and there's so much unhappiness. It's a song that's saying, 'If an electron can do it, why can't I?'
Shake it off
That's similar to 'Sky Blue Sky', in that it's about a specific moment in time, a feeling, a reminder. The chorus is pretty direct: this too shall pass.
Please Be Patient with Me
I don't know if there's anything I can add except to point out, again, the title of the song itself.
Hate It Hear
My wife calls this song 'The Liar Song', because I don't know how to use the washing machine.
Leave Me (Like You Found Me)
This one has been around for a long, long time. There's a simple sentiment in the chorus. Though it does become more expansive in the last verse when people are waking up, climbing the trees, and actively participating in their lives suddenly.
Walken
This song was on the set list once written out like the spelling of the actor Christopher Walken. It became too hard to shake that spelling.
What Light
Responding to the fact that this song is the only posted on the band's MySpace page, Tweedy says, "I don't know what a single is."
On And On
This song was actually one of the earlier songs that we demo-ed on this record, and over time - we played it once or twice live - I was doubtful about it making the record. At some point it became the closer. It became much more meaningful to me after my mom died last September. There was something that allowed me to finish that song. I really wanted to write a song that my dad could listen to, and find some comfort in, that wasn't a James Blunt song. I was very touched that my father was being soothed in any way by music. It did make me feel like this song was much more personal. I know how to write songs, so I though, maybe I should write one for dad and have him respond to it. My mom died pretty suddenly, playing cards with her friends, which is a pretty awesome way to go. She was 72. My dad and her met when they were 15, and they had not been apart that entire time. That's a pretty major adjustment for a 73-year-old man to make.

Impossible Germany
I'm just listening to the new Wilco record, and to the third track, Impossible Germany. It's one of those superb, effortlessly beautiful songs with the incredible guitar work of Nels Cline stamped all over it. This track is perhaps the most similar to A Ghost Is Born, it begins with a simple minor riff, and the verse progresses in a minimalistic style with dashes of lead guitar over the top. After a couple of verses Nels gets free reign to release one of his perfect solos that we heard on the Kicking Television record. Wilco improve so much with him in the band, he's not flash and restrains himself from showing off preferring to play what's necessary for the benefit of the song.
Anyway, it's a great song. The rest of the album's not bad either.

Another Wilco record stream
As part of the pre-release build up of Sky Blue Sky Wilco are doing another 24 streaming of the new album.
It's happening at Sunday night at 12:01 a.m. Central time and continuing it non-stop for 24 straight hours. Also, they're releasing a "deluxe version" of SBS which will include a DVD feature film by Brendan Canty and Christoph Green (Sunken Treasure, Burn to Shine). Over the last year or so they've been filming rehearsals, interviews about the record, behind the scenes stuff, etc. and have put together a 48 minute film called "Shake it Off' . Preorder it here.

I'm a bit slow of the mark at the moment so you may have heard about this elsewhere but -
Wilco Reveal Sky Blue Sky Tracklist
Rejected album titles: Bible Black Bible, Ice Cold Ice, Butt Ugly Butt
On May 15, Nonesuch will give birth to a new ghost: Sky Blue Sky, Wilco's latest album. As expected, it contains the songs "Side With the Seeds", "What Light", "Shake It Off", "Impossible Germany", "Please Be Patient With Me", "On and On and On", and "Walken", which have been floating around the internet for awhile.
Wilco were just announced as one of the acts playing Bonnaroo this year, and they have a few dates in Australia scheduled in April. But other than that, their schedule is wiiide open. Autumn Defense, John Stirrat and Pat Sansone's other band, however, are on the road until late March. So we probably shouldn't expect much live Wilco action before then.

On May 15, Nonesuch will give birth to a new ghost: Sky Blue Sky, Wilco's latest album. As expected, it contains the songs "Side With the Seeds", "What Light", "Shake It Off", "Impossible Germany", "Please Be Patient With Me", "On and On and On", and "Walken", which have been floating around the internet for awhile.
Wilco were just announced as one of the acts playing Bonnaroo this year, and they have a few dates in Australia scheduled in April. But other than that, their schedule is wiiide open. Autumn Defense, John Stirrat and Pat Sansone's other band, however, are on the road until late March. So we probably shouldn't expect much live Wilco action before then.
