Josh Ritter - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
(Sony/Victor)
The world needs more Josh Ritters; those songwriters with a natural gift of poetry and an ability to speak out about important things like Iraq as he demonstrated on last years 'The Animal Years'.
It's a little disappointing then that with 'Historical Conquests' Josh has abandoned his earnest, intricate watchmaker approach to songwriter in favour of 'shooting the watch to pieces'. The 14 new songs are raucous, varied, sing-a-long and fun. It opens with Joan of Arc and Calamity Jane trapped inside Jonah's whale, ladies underwear and the temptation of Adam. It picks up where 'Wolves' left off on 'The Animal Years', upbeat and vintage. It feels like the end of the summer vacation, a last hurrah before the real work begins.
